Roxanna Gomez was nominated by Paula Falk, Director Caregiving Services with Senior Friendship Centers in Sarasota/Venice FL. Paula mentioned that she met Roxanna in 2017 when she began attending the center's support group in Venice. She moved from Miami the year prior to be closer to her aging parents. Her father passed in 2016 and Roxanna began focusing all her efforts on her mother diagnosed with dementia and other physical challenges. Roxanna is an RN and also worked for a local hospital. She recently gave up her professional job once COVID-19 struck as she wanted to keep her mother healthy and virus-free. She took a leave of absence and has been caring for her mother full-time. Paula added, "How many of us put our lives on hold, including our career to care for our parents?"
It was very difficult to take time to provide self-care. She was able to take a short break to travel to Washington D.C. last year, and was hoping to travel this year until the virus came and changed everything. Metamorphosis-3 wants to help caregivers by providing respite retreats and, hope that vision can continue once the COVID restrictions lift. Paula stated that "Roxanna offers wisdom and support to others and, openly talks about the impact of isolation." I believe we all can relate to that during this troubled time! I had the pleasure of speaking with Roxanna and she shared that she and her mother loved lunches at the Outback. Our organization provided a gift certificate to use once they feel comfortable going out or, she can order take out. It was very special to deliver her gifts on her birthday! Flowers and cupcakes along with presents and gift cards were delivered to her home to help celebrate her special day!
